Guide to the driving theory test

As a proud owner of a provisional licence, only two major hurdles remain before you become a qualified driver. Before taking the practical test, all learners need to pass the driving theory test. If your driving instructor thinks you’re ready for it, then it’s time to book your theory test! Here’s everything you need to know before you get stuck in.

Why do I need to take the driving theory test?

Passing your theory test is a prerequisite to taking your practical test. Its objective is to ensure you have a good grounding in the Highway Code and rules of the road. Once you’ve proved this, it’s time to put it into practice.

What about coronavirus? Can I still take my theory test?

The situation is subject to change, but at the time of writing, it is possible to take your theory test in England, Scotland and Wales. For more information, you can see the latest advice on GOV.UK here, or advice in Northern Ireland here.

How do I book the driving theory test?

There are different rates for different vehicles. Learning to drive in a car is the most common, and the theory test costs £23. After you pass, booking the practical test costs £62. In Northern Ireland, it costs either £45.50 on a weekday, or £62.50 if you take it on the weekend.

For other vehicles, you can check the latest driving test rates here, or here for rates in Northern Ireland.

Please note that the test for disqualified drivers is an extended test, and will cost more than the regular theory test.

  • So what’s in the driving theory test?

OK, let’s get down to business. The theory test comprises two parts:

  • How should I prepare for the driving theory test?

Plenty of study. Followed by more study. The DVSA recommends at least 20 hours of revision before you attempt the theory test.

  • What should I bring to the theory test?

When you go to the theory test, bring your photocard driving licence. If you’re taking it in Northern Ireland, you need to bring the paper counterpart licence too. If you don’t bring the right ID, you may not be able to take the theory test, which will also mean forfeiting your booking fee.

  • When do I get my theory test results?

You’ll get your results more or less straight away. You’ll be presented with a printed letter at the test centre, which will confirm your score, and whether you’ve passed or failed.

  • What if I fail my theory test?

If you fail, don’t be downhearted. You can retake your test after three working days, and you’ll have a better idea of what to expect. Just make sure you get a bit of extra study in. And good luck!
